Watercolor illustration for Illustration Friday

My computer has returned to life. It’s alive. It’s alive… It’s alive! This watercolor is yet another Illustration Friday illustration. The word of the week is, “suspense”. I included the pen and ink sketch below the final work.

About davidjernigan

Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be an artist. I grew up encircled by beautiful books and illustrations, which led me, ever since, to want to create my own illustrations. In 1999, I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio with a major in illustration. I create my illustrations using a multitude of art media such as acrylic, oil washes, markers and pen and ink. My focus of subject matter is primarily humorous children’s illustrations, though I enjoy illustrating a variety of topics.

Glad to hear that your computer is up and running. What happened to the little girl from the sketch, his sister I presume? The suspense is killing me!

  2. Nate,
Ha, I took her out of the final illustration for reasons I cannot currently remember. Thanks for the comment!

It does look like you made a fair number of changes (and I don’t just mean the jockey undies on the green one behind the door!), so I guess the actual painting is entirely new? I should probably do that more, but unless I’ve totally destroyed the paper with eraser marks, I just use the one page. It’s a fine bunch of monsters! But the boy doesn’t look very worried. This has led to me to an elaborate backstory in which the boy already knows all these monsters but is humoring them by pretending to find them in the shed, and will act appropriately scared when they jump out, so as not to hurt their feelings.

    • Cindy D,
You came up with a good back story for the illustration. I figured the boy must know this odd bunch of creatures, our else he is in some serious trouble. As for the green undie jockeys, I felt that monster need some pants. He should not go around without any Trousers in a children’s illustration. Editing usually is a beneficial process. I create a sketch first for most my illustrations and create a finial one after that. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

Nice work! I like the editing you have done in the final piece!
