Illustration of kids on the beach

This is my entry for this week’s Illustration Friday word of the week. The word of the week is, “shades”. I thought about some kids having fun on a beach. I gave Rakel, the purple inner-tube princess, a fine pair of shades. In fact, I was thinking about Copacabana Beach in Rio. Last summer, we spent a great week on Copacabana Beach.

Ha! I am totally in love with the purple and orange inner tube creature. (The seagull and crab look somewhat more startled by it.) Such a fun happy scene!

I just have to say, if you were actually inspired by Copacabana Beach, those kids would be in thongs and a speedo. Still, nice picture, though I would have drawn one of the Titanic’s four funnels shading passengers in a lifeboat. I like how the dragon girl breaks the horizontal plain, unlike Millet’s oil paining, The Gleaners, your picture being a bit more celebratory. Remember those queer beach books with the beagle?

    • Nate,
I was trying to be anti-Gleaner by breaking the horizontal plane. I think we spent too much time in art museums. The illustration is a very, very happy picture. The girl with the sand bucket looks like she just swallowed an entire bottle of Prozac.

  3. Fun illustration! I WANT one of those inner tubes!! My favorite character by far is the CRAB!!!!! Great expression!

Such great energy and fun in this piece, David!!

  5. Shirley,
