My fan art drawing of Mer-Man from Masters of the Universe. I’m indulging in 80s nostalgia. #He-man

Here he is, Mer-Man from Masters of the Universe.  In the Filmation animated series Mer-Man is one of Skeletor’s most prominent henchman.  In the original television series he talked like a man gargling mouthwash.  His voice annoyed the heck out of my brother.  I learned how to do a decent Mer-man impression so I could annoy my brother, as well.

Illustration of a sponge monster for a client

Illustration of a sponge monster for a client (Esoterica Exhumed HTTPS://LANDOFNOD.BLOG/).  This monster has a coral club and a very spongy head.   His head is likely porous, compressible, elastic and absorbent.

Under Sea illustration. Just have to add some color in the future.

Another illustration on one of my beloved interests.  Should take the time to color this one in on my computer.  Left all the heavy black ink out of the background for that reason.

Deep down in the darkness of the Ocean. Illustration I made of a walk in the sea.

I sketched this drawing while in an art teacher meeting.  I inked it in later that same night.  I like the idea of isolating all the elements in their own flat space within the composition.

Armored Fish Creature

I created a Devonian looking armored fish creature for this illustration.  I based the creature loosely on the Dunkleosteus.  The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor has the skull of a prehistoric armored fish.  I saw it when I was a kid and it left an indelible impression.

Talking With Fish

This drawing commemorates the Aquaman of my youth.  I drew him talking with his ocean friends.  Aquaman is a copyrighted character of D.C. Comics and this is just my fan art drawing of the character.  The new D.C. Comics movie is supposedly going to include Aquaman as a character in the movie.  Apparently, the actor Jason Momoa that played Conan the Barbarian is going to portray Aquaman.  The Aquaman I grew up with was from the cartoon Super Friends and he had a very clean-cut persona.  Recently D.C. Comics has made the character have a more mystical and rough story line and appearance.  He lost his classic orange shirt and his left hand.  I miss the Aquaman of decades past whose most widely recognized power was the telepathic ability to communicate with marine life.

Sketches Of Something Fishy

Here are two more pages from my sketchbook.  Here is a bad fish joke.  Where does a fish keep his money?   In the River Bank!

More Mermaid

I felt like drawing yet another mermaid, so I did.  I used Pigma Micron pens to ink my sketch.  This illustration would look nice with a splash of vibrant color.  Maybe some other day I’ll add the color.

kelp forest illustration

This is a colored version of a sketch from my visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. The illustration is created with watercolors, pen and ink.  The underwater kelp forest exhibit at the aquarium is amazing.  While I was there, I sketched some of the fish as they hovered and swam through the kelp blades.

Wreck diver illustration

I added color to one of my old line drawings.  I’m putting my illustrations in order for my new website.  The sea and shipwrecks have always had a strong pull on my imagination.  The ocean has my imagination stuck in an undertow.  My thoughts are pulled under by a riptide.  My metaphors are trapped in the deep silt of the abyssal plain, ha!
